Culture is not a single thing that people have. It's a collage of our past and present, and reflective of our environment. And like a chameleon, we're able to adapt a lot of ourselves to our cultural environment as we move through them. We act differently at church than we do at a concert, yet still, there are through lines that make us who we are. And it's those things that remain true and steadfast that ultimate create a fabric of culture for a town or region.
When looking to develop ourselves into our best version we can be, it required that we recognize our cultural values, and understand that others too have a full set of concepts intrinsic to their experience that deserve to be validated and honored. It's with this in mind that I felt is was important that the intern group develop strong ideas about West Sacramento's culture and how that can inform our work fro the summer so we can create something of the people, rather than just for the people.

So I'm very pleased with the work of the interns today. We began with a free write on "Vision" to get our minds in motion, then completed our thinking from yesterdays work by identifying some overarching cultural values of West Sacramento:
Celebrating Diversity
Fostering Community
Pursuing Equality
Innovating Identity
Accepting Environment
Sustaining Roots
These became the jumping off point for creating the vision for the summer VAPA camp that could align with our towns cultural values. We looked first at a few Vision, Mission, and Values statements from other companies identifying what worked well and didn't so we could best create a meaningful vision statement for our camp program. Ultimately we landed on something very nice.
Our Vision: Participants will experience a fun and creative summer program that will give them the skills needed to express themselves through visual and performing arts in order to evoke pride in West Sacramento’s culture and promote a positive change in the community.
The collaboration was great and the work was great!

Our mission today was the VAPA camp's actual Mission statement and values. It was tough yesterday trying to figure out our mission, but that was because we had too much overlap in our brains about our vision and the chat we got into regarding what the cap should look like for kids. Reframing the mission as larger, more encompassing goals for the camp allowed us to hammer out the mission much faster today. From there we used our perception of West Sacramento's cultural values to guide the camp's values and that worked quickly and successfully. Whew. They are strong statements to now guide our work. We finished the day with creating the starting lists of tasks required for us to actually create a packaged and ready to go camp for next year!

CAMP YAMPA began to take shape today!
What's in a name? Well actually a lot! CAMP YAMPA is an acronym for Creative Arts in Motion Project for Young Aspiring Musicians, Performers & Artists.
When the conversation about naming the camp felt like it was starting to go off the rails a bit the interns turned it around and ensure the name was both fun and funny, while holding a lot of meaning.
We then took time to research the yampa plant and logos with flowers and starts and worked collaboratively to create a firm idea of the logo we want to pursue. It's beautiful, silly, and meaningful.
We finished off by taking our goals fro the summer tasks to be accomplished and assigned them to working pairs and came up with some due dates.
Overall the day was creative and collaborative. A great way to finish the week!
