What is Camp Yampa?
Camp Yampa is a free, in-person exploratory Visual & Performing Arts (VAPA) summer camp for the creative minded middle schoolers of Washington Unified School District. Students will learn elements of various art styles in large group activities, and also develop honed skills in an arts focus area of choice. Certificated teachers will work alongside Camp Counselors (River City High School Home Run Interns) to keep students learning in active hands-on VAPA experiences. A collaborative performance will culminate the camp to highlight the skills learned over the four weeks!
Why "Yampa"?
Named after the California native yampa plant that blooms small flowers in tight star shaped clusters, we feel this flower’s attributes perfectly represent our values when it comes to both community and individuality. The yampa flower is dually symbolic in its star-like shape, as we want our yampers to grow together both as a community and as individual stars.
Who created Camp Yampa?
The project plans were commissioned by the WUSD VAPA Task Force, a collection of administrators & teachers dedicated to bringing vital arts instruction to the students of West Sacramento. Camp Yampa was created by student interns participating in West Sacramento's Home Run program summer 2020 (Stella Bleau, Reilly Fox, Eleni Johnson, Lauren Ormond, and Yuki Zhang).
